“Music can change the world.”

— Ludwig van Beethoven

A polished black grand piano with its lid gracefully propped open, glossy surface reflecting subtle highlights, stands centered on a wooden stage in a midsize concert hall. On the piano’s music stand rests a neatly arranged choral score marked with colored tabs and pencil notes. Empty tiered risers arc behind the instrument, hinting at a full choir without depicting any people. Soft, warm stage lights from above and slightly behind create a gentle halo across the piano and risers, casting crisp yet understated shadows. Photographic realism, eye-level composition with a slightly wide lens, sharp focus throughout, and a calm, professional atmosphere suitable for a community chorale homepage hero image.
A close-up of an open choral music score printed on crisp ivory paper, rich black notation lines and lyrics clearly visible, spread across a dark walnut music stand. A slender, well-worn wooden conductor’s baton rests diagonally across the staff, its lacquered surface catching subtle reflections. In the softly blurred background, empty choral risers and acoustic shell panels suggest a rehearsal space without showing any people. Diffused overhead lighting creates gentle shadows in the page folds and soft highlights on the baton. Photographic realism, shot from a slightly elevated angle with shallow depth of field, creating an intimate, focused, and professional mood that emphasizes musical craftsmanship.

About Us

The Carolyn Mawby Chorale began in the fall of 1987, when a group of University of Michigan—Flint Chamber Singers alumni were eager to continue singing with their choir professor, Carolyn Mawby. During these early years, the U-M Flint Alumni Choir performed at the U-M Flint choral concerts. In 1995, choir membership was opened to non-alums, and the choir presented its first full-length concert. To reflect the more open membership and to honor its founder and conductor, in 2003, the name of the group was changed to the Carolyn Mawby Chorale.

The Carolyn M. Mawby Fund, established in 2000 by friends and former students, has to date provided over $50,000 in grants “to enrich choral music in Flint and the surrounding community.” Both the Carolyn Mawby Chorale and the Carolyn M. Mawby Fund continue Carolyn’s legacy and influence on the musical life of Flint and the surrounding areas.

From the choir’s beginnings with 16 alumni from the U-M Flint Chamber Singers, the Carolyn Mawby Chorale has more than tripled to its present size. Over the past 39 years, the Chorale has performed in numerous locations throughout Michigan as well as across the United States and has gained a reputation for an excellent sound and the ability to perform in a wide variety of musical styles. The Chorale has performed at both state and national ACDA conferences. The CMC has performed and recorded with Grammy award winner and operatic superstar, Sylvia McNair, and “America’s pianist,” Kevin Cole, who has written choral works expressly for the group. The Carolyn Mawby Chorale was recently featured on the first episode of the Netflix series, Flint Town. Whether you’re a “regular” and have been hearing us for decades or this is your first encounter with us, it’s our joy and honor to bring music to life for our audiences, and we are grateful for your support and interest!

An empty rehearsal room featuring curved, tiered black choral risers arranged in a semicircle, set on a polished maple floor that reflects light in soft streaks. Sturdy black music stands, each holding a neatly stacked, closed choir folder in deep navy with subtle embossed lettering, are arranged with deliberate symmetry. The back wall is lined with programmable acoustic panels in warm gray and beige tones. Bright but diffused overhead LED lighting evenly illuminates the space, minimizing harsh shadows. Photographic realism with a wide-angle, eye-level composition and sharp focus throughout, conveying order, readiness, and a professional community choir environment in Flint, Michigan.

A detailed view of a conductor’s podium in a concert setting: a slightly elevated black platform with a simple, modern metal music stand holding a well-thumbed choral score opened to a dynamic passage. Several colored sticky tabs protrude from the pages, and a small digital metronome and pencil are placed neatly at the base. The background reveals blurred rows of plush red concert hall seats and soft, vertical wooden wall panels, with no people visible. Warm, theatrical spotlights from above illuminate the score and podium, creating a focused pool of light and gentle falloff into shadow. Photographic realism, medium focal length, centered composition, conveying precision and leadership in a professional chorale context.
